Niagara Falls - One of the Wonders of the World
Amazing!, Unbelievable! Stunning! Dynamic! Breathtaking! Awesome! Words seem so powerless to describe the true beauty of scenic wonders, but we still try. Through the years people have attempted to find words to describe Niagara Falls and they have come up short. Words alone cannot describe the experience of seeing this true wonder of nature. One must hear them, see them, feel them, and even smell them to truly understand their beauty.
When you first enter the falls area the sound and roar of the water surrounds you with its thunder. Although the sound is very loud it is not over-powering. Instead the rumbling of the water is quite pleasant, even relaxing. Like the waves hitting the beach the sounds of the water crashing into the rocks evokes a peaceful feeling that is very difficult to describe. People often buy little fountains or water falls to put on their desks to promote a sense of peace or solitude. We are one with water because our bodies are made up of mostly water. The sound of the water calls us. It erases the unpleasant noises that surround us every day. It overpowers conversations, cell phones ringing, kids crying, people yelling, and even cars riding by. The only sound is the rushing water that inevitably hits the rocks below.
When you finally see Niagara Falls you realize that your dream of beauty is finally a reality. Pictures, although beautiful, just don’t do the falls justice. Pictures are static and the falls are fluid - ever moving, ever changing. The light changes from minute to minute. If you stay at the falls long enough the colors change as the day wanes. Seeing the falls at night is an entirely different experience. They light up the falls so that the water can be seen in the dark. The colors are luscious and calming because they are mostly pastels. If you visit the falls, plan to stay all day so that you can see the various colors as they change throughout the day.
If by chance you visit the falls in the spring, summer, or early fall you will usually see the stunning rainbow that covers the falls at Rainbow Bridge. Capturing this picture on film, memory disk, or in your mind is priceless. The beauty of the falls combined with a stupendous rainbow is almost too beautiful to conceive. The sight is one that you can evoke throughout your life whenever you need a stress reliever. Just close your eyes and think of the Rainbow bridge, the falls, and the glorious rainbow provided by nature. This rainbow is so huge and gorgeous that it must be the rainbow that inspired the writer of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ in The Wizard of Oz. If we could get over that rainbow, surely we would be in paradise.
If you go behind the Falls you can experience a "feeling" of the falls. There is a beautiful mist that permeates the air. You will get a little wet, but that’s as close to the falls as you can get without endangering your life. One thing you should do at the falls is go behind them or ride Maid of the Mist. Either experience will allow you to feel the power of the water and the mist it creates. Personally, I would experience both because most people visit Niagara Falls only once in their lives - so nothing should be left out.
If you are from a big city you know what polluted air smells like. But at Niagara you will experience clean, fresh, pristine air that has been cleansed by the crashing of the falls onto the rocks. The mist is everywhere cleaning any impurities out of the air. Taking deep breaths feels as though the mist is cleansing our bodies.
Upon leaving Niagara Falls we know that we have had the perfect experience - we have seen nature at its finest and have experienced a truly perfect time. Forget the high prices, the junky city surrounding the falls or the long trip home. Enjoy the moment and truly live within it. Remember that few dreams compare to the reality. This is not the case with Niagara Falls where the reality exceeds the dream.
